A Topographical Map of The Rest
A response to the topic of Liminal Space
The liminal space present in this work is the space between artifice and reality. The concept of the work comments on the idea of artifice in personality and the creation of acted or “put-on” character versions of oneself as a vehicle for social interaction. The allusion to a topographical map is representative of artifice in that it is essentially an image designed to trick the viewer into believing they are seeing a three-dimensional when in actuality they are presented with lines presented together. This applied over the image of my severed head from my work shows an artifice in the self and the properties associated with the self such as the identity, personality, and values. The title is used to link the works as well as to complete the visual link to a topographical map. The digital medium allowed me to emulate the cold and mathematical feel of these maps using various digital techniques.
